Phuentsholing to Thimphu Taxi 2026
Phuentsholing to Thimphu is about 170 km and 5–6 hours by road, climbing from around 300 m at the border to about 2,300 m in the capital. A private taxi costs roughly ₹4,000–₹4,800 in a sedan and ₹5,000–₹6,500 in an SUV. A seat in a shared taxi costs about Nu 700–1,000, and the bus about Nu 180–225.
- Route: Phuentsholing → Gedu → Chukha → Chuzom → Thimphu
- Best stops: Kharbandi Monastery views, Gedu for lunch, the Chukha hydropower viewpoint, and the three-river confluence at Chuzom
- Leave by: late morning at the latest, so you arrive before dark
- Permit: your entry permit is checked at the Rinchending check post just outside town

This is the road that turns a border town into the Bhutan you came to see. In five hours, the hot plains give way to forest, then cloud, then cool pine-covered hills, and the road rarely runs straight for more than a minute.
It's a beautiful drive if you know what to expect. This guide walks you through it stop by stop, compares a private taxi, a shared taxi and the bus, and explains how the road changes through the year.

The old route via Chapcha and Tsimasham is still used when the bypass is blocked, usually by landslides near Chukha in monsoon. It adds some distance and time; your driver will know which road is open on the day.
Chuzom is also a junction: the road to Paro turns off here, and the road to Haa starts nearby. Going straight to Paro? It's about the same total time as Thimphu.

How the shared fare works: Bhutan's taxi fares are set for the whole vehicle, and in a shared taxi that fare is split between the passengers. That's why a seat costs roughly a quarter of the full-car price.
When a private taxi wins: Three or four travellers sharing a private sedan pay about the same per person as in a shared taxi, and they get door-to-door service with sightseeing stops.

|

|
Cold at the top, occasional frost; clear days

|
Safety tips
- Arrive in daylight. Fog and hairpin bends make the climb slow and harder at night.
- Motion sickness: sit in the front, eat lightly before you leave, and ask for a stop at Gedu.
- Altitude: you gain about 2,000 m in a day. Drink water and take it easy on your first evening in Thimphu.
- Landslides: if a road is blocked, your driver will wait for it to clear or switch to the old route. Don't push for speed.
- Speed limits are low and enforced, so the 5–6 hour estimate is realistic, not cautious.
