Bhutan Car Rental for Groups 2026
For groups in Bhutan, a Toyota Hiace van carries 6–9 people for about ₹5,500–₹7,000 a day, and a Toyota Coaster mini-bus carries 10–18 for about ₹8,000–₹10,000. Larger groups travel in two or more vehicles. Shared between a full group, that works out to roughly ₹450–₹800 per person per day, the lowest per-head transport cost in Bhutan.
- 6–9 people: one Hiace
- 10–18 people: one Coaster
- 19–27 people: a Coaster plus a Hiace
- 28 or more: two Coasters, plus a Hiace if needed

A group trip lives or dies on logistics. Twenty people, forty suitcases, three hotels and one schedule can turn a dream holiday into a headcount exercise. The right vehicle mix, with experienced drivers who know which hotels a Coaster can reach, takes most of that weight off the organiser.
This guide is for whoever's organising: which vehicles to book for your size, what each kind of group needs, what it costs per head, and the checklist that keeps everyone moving together.

The luggage rule for groups: a full vehicle has very little boot space left. For airport arrivals with large suitcases, either size up one level or add a small luggage vehicle.

What Each Kind of Group Needs
Friends' trips (6–12)
One Hiace or Coaster, flexible stops, and a driver who's happy to find a good lunch place. Friends usually want Tiger's Nest, a night in Punakha and one long day trip such as Chele La. Agree a daily start time on day 1, because one late riser holds up everyone.
Corporate offsites and incentive trips (10–40)
Punctuality matters most. Ask for vehicles of the same model and age, a single coordinator, and a written schedule shared with every driver. Plan airport arrivals in batches if people fly in on different flights.
Pilgrimage groups (10–40)
These groups often include older travellers. Choose vehicles with easy steps, plan shorter driving days, and allow extra time at monasteries and dzongs. Your operator should know which temples welcome group prayers and what dress is expected.
School and college groups (15–40)
Coasters with seat belts for everyone, one teacher per vehicle, a fixed headcount at every stop, and no night driving. Share a rooming list and an emergency contact sheet with your operator before arrival.
Wedding parties and big family events (10–30)
A mix of vehicles: a premium car for the couple and Coasters or Hiaces for guests, coordinated around ceremonies and photos. Book 6–8 weeks ahead, especially in autumn.
What It Costs per Head
For the classic 6-day road route (Phuentsholing → Thimphu → Punakha → Paro → Phuentsholing), transport only, plus 5% GST.

Compare: a couple in a sedan pays about ₹10,080 each for the same route, so group travel costs roughly a third as much per person.
On top of transport: SDF (₹1,200 per Indian adult per night, half for ages 6–12), hotels, meals and entry fees. Groups of international travellers also need licensed guides and book through a licensed operator.

The Organiser's Checklist
Before the trip
- Final headcount and ages two weeks ahead (for vehicles, SDF and permits)
- Everyone's ID copies: passports or Voter IDs, plus birth certificates for children. Route permits list every traveller.
- A rooming list and your hotels, so drivers know the drop-off points
- Exact vehicle models confirmed in writing, ideally the same model for a convoy
- One lead contact in your group and one coordinator at the operator, with WhatsApp numbers swapped
On the road
- A fixed start time each day, with a 10-minute grace period
- A headcount at every stop before vehicles leave, especially with students
- Vehicles stay in sight of each other on mountain roads, with the lead driver setting the pace
- Lunch booked ahead for big groups; small roadside places can't feed 30 people at once
Coaster limits to know
- Coasters are slower on tight hairpins and can't always reach small hotels or narrow village lanes. Your operator may use a smaller shuttle for the last stretch.
- Some trailheads and viewpoints have small car parks, so groups are dropped and the bus parks further away.
- Ask whether your hotel has space for a Coaster before you book it.
*Permits for groups work the same way as for individuals, just with a longer list. See the Bhutan car rental permit guide.
