Permits & SDF Guide For Indian Travellers (2026)
This is where most first-time visitors get confused, so here's the current, accurate picture for 2026:
- Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): Indian nationals pay INR 1,200 per person, per night. Children aged 6–12 pay 50% (INR 600), and children under 6 are exempt. This rate is fixed until 31 August 2027.
- Permit, not a visa: Indian citizens don't need a visa — you apply for a Bhutan entry permit, with the SDF paid at the permit stage.
- Bringing an Indian car in? Indian-registered vehicles are allowed, but you must obtain a vehicle permit from the RSTA office in Phuentsholing before driving beyond the border town. Carry your licence, vehicle documents, and road permits.
- No self-drive for foreign tourists: Rentals in Bhutan come with a driver. Given the terrain, most travellers prefer this anyway.
- Border-town exception: Indian visitors staying 24 hours or less in border areas like Phuentsholing typically don't pay the SDF; it applies once you go beyond or stay longer.
