Car Rental in Punakha 2026 | Thimphu Drive, Sights & Prices
Most travellers reach Punakha by car from Thimphu: about 75 km and 2.5–3 hours over Dochula Pass. A one-way transfer costs roughly ₹2,000–₹2,500 in a sedan, and a full Thimphu–Punakha day trip about ₹3,500–₹4,500. Punakha needs a route permit, which your operator gets in Thimphu on a weekday. Stay at least one night: Punakha is too good, and too far, to rush.

- Best car: a compact SUV for the pass; a sedan manages in good weather
- Time needed: 1 full day for the highlights, 2 days with the hikes and rafting
- Where next: Phobjikha (3–4 hrs), Paro (4–5 hrs) or Bumthang (7–8 hrs)
- Best seasons: spring and autumn; winter is mild here, unlike most of Bhutan
After the cool pine forests of Thimphu, Punakha feels like a different country. The road drops from Dochula at 3,100 m to a warm river valley around 1,250 m, with rice terraces, orange trees and the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan sitting where two rivers meet.
It was Bhutan's capital for three centuries, and it's still where many travellers say they fell in love with the country. This guide covers how to get there by car, how to spend your time, and where to drive next.

Before you go:
- The route permit comes first. It's issued in Thimphu, Monday to Friday. Plan to leave for Punakha the day after your Thimphu permit day, not on a Saturday morning before the permit is ready.
- Leave by 8 am for the best chance of clear Himalayan views from Dochula.
- Motion sickness? The descent is the bendiest part. Sit in the front and ask your driver to take it slowly.
- Car choice: A sedan is fine in dry weather. In monsoon or winter, an SUV handles the pass more confidently. See the best car for a Bhutan trip.

The most popular extension: Punakha → Phobjikha → Paro adds one or two days to a western loop and takes you into Bhutan's best-loved rural valley. Our Gangtey car rental guide covers that leg.
Each of these needs your route permit to list every place, so decide before your Thimphu permit day.
Punakha Through the Year
At about 1,250 m, Punakha is the lowest and mildest stop on a western Bhutan circuit. That changes when it's at its best.

Punakha Drubchen and Tshechu festivals (dates follow the lunar calendar); pleasant days
Book cars and hotels early for festival week
March–May
Warm, green, flowering trees along the river; rafting season
The easiest driving of the year
June–August
Hot and wet; rice terraces at their greenest
Rain can slow the Dochula descent; allow extra time
September–November
Golden rice harvest, clear skies
Peak season; book 3–4 weeks ahead
December–January
Mild and sunny in the valley, with oranges ripening; cold and occasionally icy on Dochula
Start after the frost lifts on the pass; an SUV is the safer choice
Winter tip: Punakha is one of the few places in Bhutan that's comfortable in January. A winter trip pairing Punakha with Phobjikha (for the black-necked cranes) works well by car.

Official benchmark: At the government inter-district taxi rate, Thimphu–Punakha (about 71 km) works out to roughly Nu 1,650 one way for a 5–6 seater. A tourist car costs more because the driver waits, stops at Dochula and often returns empty.
Best value: If Punakha is part of a longer loop, book one car for the whole trip rather than separate one-way transfers. Every vehicle class is in the Bhutan car rental price guide.
